Bushnell Corporation was founded in 1948 by David P. Bushnell when he returned to California from his honeymoon in Japan with two crates of binoculars and sold them by mail order.
Bushnell specialized in optical equipment for outdoor sports. In addition to binoculars, they also sold monoculars, rifle scopes, range-finders. Later they sold laser sights, night-vision scopes, and other para-military optical gear. The company no longer sells photographic equipment but at one time offered a range of rebranded 35mm SLR lenses and teleconverters manufacturered by Japanese companies that included Tamron and Tokina.

John Jacob Bausch and Henry Lomb |
Bausch & Lomb is a manufacturer of contact lenses and eyecare products. It began in 1853 as a little optical shop in Rochester, New York, founded by the German immigrants John Jacob Bausch and Henry Lomb. In 1875, they started making microscopes and in 1883 the company started making camera lenses, mainly of the Carl Zeiss type. In 1888 Bausch & Lomb produced the lenses for the legendary roll film camera Kodak No. 1. Bausch & Lomb was also a well respected manufacturer of leaf shutters with Bausch & Lomb's "Unicum" shutter being one of the best shutters of its time. Initially the company co-operated with German optics and glass makers, but from 1913 onwards the company started making its own optical glass. A late highlight of the company's still camera optics were the lenses for the cameras of the "Surveyor" lunar probes in 1965.
