Rebadged: Optex MC Auto Zoom 1:3.5-4.5 f=28-70mm

Cost: $14.99 (average market price unknown)

It's a nice looking lens with the red line and markings. Operation is smooth, but nothing special. And that's where the positive stops...

Image quality is pretty bad. Dull pictures, lack of sharpness, serious color aberrations, and significant flaring when remotely point in the direction of the sun. It has it all!

I can't find to much (or any) information on Optex as a lens manufacturer, although there does seems to be a Optex out there right now selling optical equipment. But I doubt it's the same company. It is more likely that this is a re-branded lens for some localized re-seller, possibly from Samyang as one of the main Korean lens manufacturers for 3rd parties. In those days Samyang was not known for quality, so that could explain the results. These days, Samyang seems to produce far better lenses, and still add budget pricing.

So, not to much to say on this one... if you find one, do avoid it... unless you want to do something creative with it.

  1. Yeah, definitively a Samyang. There's also an AF version with (I believe) the same optical formula. Pretty dreadful little thing, unfortunately!
